CSK has added Gujarat’s Urvil Patel to their team as a direct substitute for the injured Vansh Bedi, for the remainder of IPL 2025. The 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will be joining CSK at his base price of INR 30 lakh.
Bedi, who was selected for INR 55 lakh during the mega auction in November last year, has yet to make an appearance for CSK in IPL 2025, and is currently out of commission due to a ligament tear in his left ankle.
Urvil was invited to join the CSK camp for a mid-season trial, along with Ayush Mhatre. This opportunity arose after their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained an elbow injury. In the main squad, Urvil will be collaborating with 17-year-old Mhatre, who holds the title of CSK’s youngest-ever player.
Urvil will make his second appearance in the IPL, having previously played for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2023 season. However, he is yet to be capped in the league.
In the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Urvil made quite an impact with his batting skills. He scored a total of 315 runs in six innings, maintaining an impressive average of 78.75 and a strike rate close to 230. Although his team, Gujarat, was unable to advance to the knockouts, Urvil emerged as the leading six-hitter of the tournament with 29 sixes in just six games. Following closely behind was Rajat Patidar, who hit a total of 27 sixes in ten matches.
In Indore, during the match against Tripura, he surprised everyone by hitting a 28-ball hundred, making it the joint second-fastest in T20 cricket. Urvil’s impressive performance continues as he has accumulated 1162 runs in 47 T20 innings at an outstanding strike rate of 170.38.
Following his impressive performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, Urvil continued to shine in the Ranji Trophy. In the quarter-finals against Saurashtra in Rajkot last February, he scored a remarkable 140 off 197 deliveries, setting a new personal best.
As the IPL playoffs approach, CSK has already been eliminated, giving them the opportunity to introduce fresh faces like Urvil and focus on rebuilding for the 2026 season in their remaining three matches.
