CSK, the IPL team from Chennai, has taken in Dewald Brevis, a South African batter, to fill in for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the rest of the 2025 season. Brevis will be joining CSK for a sum of INR 2.2 crore.
Brevis, with 81 T20 matches under his belt and an impressive record of 1787 runs and a highest score of 162, recently played for South Africa in two T20Is in 2023. His previous experience includes playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL during the years 2022 and 2024. Just this year, he played a crucial role in helping MI Cape Town win their first SA20 title by scoring an explosive 18-ball 38 in the final match. He also proved to be a top performer in the tournament, ranking as the sixth-highest run-getter (230 runs at a strike rate of 184). Brevis’ exceptional ability to hit powerful shots and find unusual gaps on the field has garnered attention from franchise owners worldwide. In addition to playing in the CPL, he is currently representing the MI franchise in Major League Cricket USA.
Entering the IPL 2025 auction in November with a base price of INR 75 lakh, Brevis unfortunately went unsold. However, his recent performances have been impressive. He ranked as the second-highest run-getter in both South Africa’s one-day and first-class tournaments. Despite his young age, the 21-year-old has shown potential for greatness, with many noting his striking similarities to AB de Villiers on the field. In fact, he has earned the nickname ‘Baby AB’.
Unfortunately, Gurjapneet, the Tamil Nadu bowler purchased by CSK for INR 2.2 crore during the auction, did not have the opportunity to play this season.
At present, CSK holds the lowest position in the points table, having only secured two victories out of seven matches. This came after their usual captain Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained an elbow injury and was unable to continue for the rest of the season, resulting in MS Dhoni taking on his role.
