MS Dhoni was declared lbw to Sunil Narine in his first match back as Chennai Super Kings captain against Kolkata Knight Riders, sparking a debate.
Dhoni was initially declared out by umpire Chris Gaffaney after the ball from Narine struck him on the front pad in line with the stumps, despite pitching outside off. However, Dhoni requested a review and third umpire Vinod Seshan deliberated before making his final call.
During the replays on the broadcast, UltraEdge picked up a murmur when the ball passed the inside edge. However, it wasn’t a clear spike that would typically confirm an edge. Seshan analyzed various split-screen replays, including a front-on view and one from square-leg. The main focus was to check for any space between bat and pad. The subsequent ball-tracking projection indicated that the ball would hit leg stump, resulting in the on-field decision being upheld.
Despite not displaying any apparent discontentment, Dhoni remained on the field after being dismissed while CSK head coach Stephen Fleming stepped onto the pitch during a strategic timeout. While it is not uncommon for Fleming to use timeouts as an opportunity to walk out and strategize, during this particular instance, he took the time to have a conversation with umpire Gaffaney.
