The Gujarat Titans claimed victory by seven wickets, with Gill scoring an unbeaten 61 and Washington contributing 49 runs. Sunrisers Hyderabad, on the other hand, scored 152 for 8, with Reddy top-scoring at 31. Siraj took 4 wickets for 17 runs, while Sai Kishore and Prasidh each took two wickets for Hyderabad.
In their latest match at home, SRH experienced yet another failure in their batting performance, extending their losing streak to four consecutive defeats in IPL 2025. The team struggled on the sluggish, black-soil pitch and could only hit one six after Travishek was dismissed in the powerplay. Leading the attack, Mohammed Siraj proved to be a formidable opponent from the very beginning and ultimately achieved his personal best IPL record of 4 for 17.
Pat Cummins delivered a quick-fire 22 runs off nine balls and then secured the dismissal of Jos Buttler for a duck in Gujarat Titans’ pursuit of 153, providing some hope for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). However, this optimism dwindled when Washington Sundar smashed 23 runs off just nine deliveries in the initial overs. While GT did not require Washington’s bowling skills earlier in the day, his aggressive batting at number four helped seal their victory on a sluggish pitch. Although he fell short of his first IPL fifty, GT’s skipper Shubman Gill led them to triumph with an unbeaten 61 off 43 balls, alongside the contributions of Sherfane Rutherford.
The battle between Travishek and Siraj.
Siraj ignited the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December with a fiery send-off to Travis Head in Adelaide. Fast forward four months, and Siraj was now facing Head for the first time in T20s. The encounter was short-lived, lasting only five balls. Despite Head hitting two fours off Siraj, the fast bowler quickly retaliated with his signature wobble-seam delivery, forcing him to chip a catch to midwicket and depart for 8.
Abhishek Sharma’s four fours were quickly followed by Siraj claiming his 100th wicket in the IPL. Unfortunately, in his third over of the powerplay, Sharma miscued a catch to mid-on. This marked Siraj’s sixth wicket in the powerplay this season, giving him the highest record among all bowlers with an impressive economy rate of 6.27.
Siraj came back in the final moments to retire both Aniket Verma and Simarjeet Singh, the designated Impact Player for SRH.
Rashid and Sai Kishore had vastly different experiences on their recent outings.
After the early departures of Head and Abhishek, Rashid Khan entered the game with confidence as his previous performance had been less than stellar, allowing him to take a more relaxed approach. He began strong, conceding only 10 runs in the first two overs. However, when he made a mistake in his length, Reddy and Klaasen took full advantage and sent the ball to the boundary. This resulted in Rashid’s third consecutive match without taking any wickets, finishing with overall figures of 1 for 143 in 14 overs at an economy rate of 10.21.
Meanwhile, left-arm fingerspinner R Sai Kishore displayed impressive mastery of his length and variations. He secured the crucial dismissal of Klaasen, who fell for 27 runs off 19 balls after being deceived by a speedy dart that bounced off the pitch. Additionally, Sai Kishore forced Reddy to make a premature exit after scoring 31 runs off 34 deliveries, ultimately ending with figures of 4-0-24-2.
Cummins’ late blows were the reason SRH reached a total of 150. Among the top eight batters, he was the only one with a strike rate exceeding 160.
The fourth spot belongs to Washington.
GT seemed to have given Washington a franchise debut with the intention of utilizing his offspin against SRH’s predominantly left-handed top order. However, Siraj’s dominance in the powerplay and Sai Kishore’s effectiveness during the middle overs meant that GT did not end up resorting to Washington’s offspin after all.
After his childhood friend B Sai Sudharsan and Buttler were dismissed in consecutive overs, Washington stepped up to the plate as No. 4 for the batting side. He seized the opportunity in the final over of the powerplay, launching two sixes and two fours off Simarjeet’s bowling. It was reminiscent of Washington’s fearless approach in the TNPL back in 2016, where he opened alongside Abhinav Mukund and displayed his knack for big shots. And in a similar fashion, Washington took down SRH’s Impact Player, removing him from the attack with ease.
Despite the earlier onslaught, Washington showed no sign of slowing down. When ambidextrous bowler Kamindu Mendis delivered a ball at the stumps with his right hand, Washington cleverly manoeuvred himself and struck it over extra-cover for a boundary. He appeared on track to reach fifty, but was caught out just one run short of the milestone in the 14th over.
At the time, Gill had reached the age of 50 as he and Rutherford joined forces to complete the task. Rutherford contributed an impressive unbeaten 35 runs in just 16 balls.
