GT, RCB and PBKS have all secured their spots in the IPL 2025 playoffs after GT defeated DC on Sunday evening.
This outcome narrowed the competition to only one remaining playoff spot, with DC, Mumbai Indians (MI), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) vying for it.
GT claimed victory on Sunday, securing the top spot on the table with 18 points. Trailing them are RCB and PBKS in second and third place, both with 17 points after playing 12 matches. If LSG manages to win their remaining three games, their maximum potential points would be 16. On the other hand, MI (currently at 14 points) and DC (currently at 13 points) can only reach or exceed 17 points if they face off on May 21.
In the event of a DC loss against MI, their elimination is likely. However, should MI fall to DC, they must secure a victory in their last game against PBKS and also rely on DC losing to PBKS in their final league match, while hoping that LSG drops at least one of their remaining three games.
GT and RCB have both secured playoff spots once again, with GT making it for the third time in four IPL seasons and RCB for the fifth time in six years. PBKS, under their new captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting, have also achieved a major milestone this season by securing a top-four finish for the first time since 2014. This marks a significant turnaround for the franchise.
Although GT, RCB, and PBKS have secured spots in the playoffs, they are still vying for a top-two finish, which grants them two opportunities to reach the final. The teams ranked first and second on the points table will face off in Qualifier 1 for a direct pathway to the final. The runner-up of Qualifier 1 will then take on the victor of the Eliminator, consisting of teams placed third and fourth, for a chance at making it to the final.
