Gujarat Titans reached a total of 180 for 6, with impressive contributions from Pant and Sudharsan who scored 60 and 56 runs respectively. Thakur and Bishnoi took two wickets each for Lucknow Super Giants.
The partnership between Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan for Gujarat Titans (GT) resulted in a solid 120-run opening stand. However, GT’s middle order failed to capitalize on this start. With Gill and Sai Sudharsan getting dismissed in the 13th and 14th overs respectively, GT could only add 45 runs in the last five overs thanks to Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) strong bowling effort. As a result, GT ended with a total of 180 for 6, managing just 60 runs in their final eight overs.
GT was given the opportunity to bat first on a black-soil surface, and they took advantage of it. Gill and Sai Sudharsan made an impressive partnership, adding 54 runs during the powerplay. Sai Sudharsan began with a four off Shardul Thakur’s first ball, followed by another four off Akash Deep’s overpitched delivery. Meanwhile, at the other end of the crease, Gill would often shimmy out to create scoring opportunities for himself.
During the eighth over, LSG’s attempt to burglarize an over from Aiden Markram was interrupted by Gill and Sai Sudharsan scoring 15 runs off the part-time offspinner. However, Digvesh Rathi, a mystery spinner, displayed improved control by bowling in both the powerplay and death overs. If Abdul Samad had caught a shot at short cover, Rathi could have ended Sai Sudharsan’s innings on 46.
After Gill reached his own fifty, Sudharsan also scored his fourth half-century in six IPL innings. However, LSG managed to break GT’s opening partnership in the 13th over as Gill was caught out by Avesh Khan for 60 runs off 38 balls. Then, Bishnoi took down both Sudharsan and Washington Sundar in consecutive overs, causing a slowdown for GT.
Bishnoi and Rathi finished with a combined record of 8-0-66-3. Thakur then wrapped up the innings strongly, utilizing his variations effectively on a slowing pitch – as mentioned by Sai Sudharsan during the break. He also noted the occasional low bounce, which could potentially come into play for GT’s three-man spin attack in their defense.
