In Saturday night’s IPL 2025 match in Ahmedabad, Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya has been penalized INR 12 lakh for his team’s inadequate over-rate against Gujarat Titans (GT).
MI’s second game resulted in another defeat for the team, marking their second loss of the season. However, it was also Hardik’s first time playing after being banned from the season-opener due to MI’s slow over-rate in the last game of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). While this was a punishment in the past, the IPL has since eliminated bans and replaced them with fines and in-game field restrictions for similar offences. This news surely brings some relief to both MI and Hardik.
The ninth game of IPL 2025 marked the first instance of a slow over-rate penalty being imposed this season.
MI, utilizing a bowling lineup consisting of four fast bowlers – Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Satyanarayana Raju and Hardik himself – exceeded the allotted time to finish their overs as GT managed to score 196 runs with 8 wickets down. However, MI was unable to effectively initiate their chase and ultimately ended at 160 runs with 6 wickets remaining.
Following the loss in their opening match away at Chennai against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), it was revealed that MI’s defeat was led by Suryakumar Yadav. The team was given the opportunity to bat first, but were held back to a score of 155 for 9. This was largely due to Noor Ahmad, who claimed four wickets and still holds the best figures in the competition thus far with his impressive 4 for 18. Ultimately, CSK managed to surpass the target in the final over, securing victory by four wickets.
