The 22-year-old batsman from Karnataka, R Smaran, who took over Adam Zampa’s spot on the Sunrisers Hyderabad team, will no longer be able to play for the rest of IPL 2025 due to an injury. Taking his place on the squad will be Harsh Dubey.
Dubey, a 22-year-old left-arm spin-bowling allrounder from Vidarbha, made history during the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season by picking up a whopping 69 wickets for his team. This achievement surpassed the previous record of 68 wickets held by Ashutosh Aman in the 2018-19 season. Now, Dubey has been selected to play for SRH with a base price of INR 30 lakh at the last IPL auction.
While Dubey has been impressive in the Ranji Trophy, his performance in white-ball formats has been average. In List A cricket, he has taken 21 wickets from 20 bowling innings with an average of 34.66, and in T20s, he has nine wickets from 16 bowling innings with an economy rate of 6.78. However, his value has increased after his recent success in the Ranji Trophy.
Entering the IPL, he joins SRH whose 2025 campaign seems to be nearing its end. Last year, in IPL 2024, they reached the final but this time around, with three wins out of ten games, they are sitting at the ninth spot on the points table. Even if they manage to win their remaining four matches, their total points would only reach 14. This leaves them relying on other top teams to slip up in order for them to have a chance. However, their current net run-rate of -1.192 is currently the lowest among all ten teams, which includes the already-eliminated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).
The upcoming match for SRH will take place at their home stadium in Hyderabad, facing off against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Monday evening.
