According to a statement released by the BCCI on Friday afternoon, IPL 2025 has been put on hold for one week with immediate effect due to the ongoing cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
According to board secretary Devajit Saikia, updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be provided at a later time. This decision was made by the IPL Governing Council after considering input from various parties such as franchisees, players, broadcaster, sponsors, and fans. While the BCCI has confidence in our armed forces, they believe it is best to act in the best interest of all involved.
The suspension of the IPL was a unanimous decision made by senior BCCI officials, including Saikia and IPL chairman Arun Dhumal. Notification of the suspension was given to all franchises before an official statement was released at 2.40pm IST. The participants on the call were in agreement that it would not be suitable to proceed with the IPL in the current circumstances.
The teams are currently disbanding, as both players and support staff are making arrangements to depart from India with assistance from their franchises and player associations for those from other countries.
This development occurred the day following the IPL’s decision to cancel the PBKS-DC match on Thursday during the first innings. Due to the closure of airports in Dharamsala and neighboring areas, both teams’ players and support staff were transported by bus from Dharamsala to Jalandhar, followed by a train journey to Delhi.
As stated by South African Cricketers’ Association CEO Andrew Breetzke, the well-being of players is non-negotiable. We are regularly communicating with all South African players at the IPL and providing them with updates on security reports. Any assistance they require has also been made available to them.
The current season of IPL, which has already played 58 games (including the abandoned match in Dharamsala), has only 12 group stage games remaining before the playoffs. If there is a further delay in resuming the league due to India’s upcoming five-Test series against England starting on June 20, the next available window for IPL matches may not be until September. This is because India does not have any bilateral series scheduled during that time, although it does coincide with the men’s Asia Cup.
