Jake Fraser-McGurk, the Australian batsman signed by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 9 crore (USD 1.07 million approx.) at the mega auction, has joined Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) English recruit Jamie Overton in opting out of IPL 2025. Both players have informed their respective franchises that they will not be rejoining the squad when the tournament resumes on May 17.
The IPL has revealed that Mustafizur Rahman, a Bangladeshi fast bowler, will now take the place of Fraser-McGurk at DC for a sum of INR 6 crore. Mustafizur, who has featured for DC in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the IPL, has managed to secure nine wickets over the course of those seasons. It should be noted that he will not be able to be retained by DC according to the revised replacement regulations for IPL 2026.
The IPL’s initial rules allow for teams to secure substitutes in the case of sickness or injury, as long as it happens during or prior to their 12th game of the season. However, the league has made the decision to modify these regulations, allowing for temporary replacements to be acquired for the remainder of the rescheduled season.
The BCB has brought up complications regarding the Mustafizur signing, as they have not yet been approached for an NOC. Currently, Mustafizur is with the Bangladesh team in Dubai for the first of two T20I series. The other series, which coincides with the revised IPL schedule, will take place in Pakistan.
Despite being a key player at the end of IPL 2024, Fraser-McGurk’s performance with the bat led to him being replaced midway through this season by DC. Despite starting in the opening six matches, the 23-year-old only managed to score a total of 55 runs, with his highest score being 38. As a result, he was eventually benched due to his lackluster results.
Despite this, the progress will not benefit DC, who are still in playoff contention. It is believed that they are awaiting confirmations from a number of their top international players.
Among those mentioned are Australian left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc, as well as the duo from South Africa consisting of Faf du Plessis and Tristan Stubbs.
According to CSA, Stubbs is among the players selected for South Africa’s team in the upcoming World Test Championship final at Lord’s on June 11. As per initial NOCs, which were set to expire on May 25 (the original date of the IPL final), all WTC-bound players are expected to comply with their obligations.
