In a significant development, Jasprit Bumrah has joined the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of their IPL 2025 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Monday. This comes as a much-needed support for the struggling team.
Bumrah is now a member of MI, having received approval from the BCCI’s medical team at the Bengaluru Centre of Excellence. He has been undergoing rehab since January due to lower back stress. Under the guidance of Mahela Jayawardene and the MI support staff, he will plan his return schedule.
An integral aspect of the plan for Bumrah’s return was to have him participate in one or two practice matches to assess his fitness. It remains uncertain whether he was able to do so at the Centre of Excellence or if he will have the opportunity with MI.
The most recent update on Bumrah, dated April 4, stated that he would be absent from the upcoming match against RCB and may not return to play for some time.
Bumrah had been gradually increasing his bowling workload at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in recent weeks. As of April 4, he was reportedly nearing completion of the final round of fitness tests.
Bumrah is taking a careful approach to his recovery, prioritizing full fitness before making his return to action. This decision is mindful of India’s upcoming five-Test series in England, set to begin on June 28.
In the 2025 IPL, our team has participated in four matches, with one victory and three losses. Due to Bumrah’s absence, we welcomed Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur, and Ashwani Kumar to their debut games. Our attack was led by Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, while Hardik Pandya served as the other seam-bowling option for our captain.
Since joining the league in 2013, Bumrah has exclusively represented MI in his IPL career. In a total of 133 games, he has taken an impressive tally of 165 wickets. The only exception to this consistent track record was in 2023, when a back injury forced him to sit out the entire season.
Bumrah sustained his most recent injury during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. As a result, he was unable to compete in the Champions Trophy, which India emerged victorious in last month. This marks the first occurrence of Bumrah experiencing a back injury since undergoing surgery in March 2023.
