Unfortunately, Jasprit Bumrah’s absence will not be limited to just Friday’s IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In fact, there is uncertainty surrounding his availability for MI’s upcoming game at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.
Meanwhile, Bumrah, who has been undergoing rehab since January due to a stress-related issue in his lower back, is nearing his comeback. He has been steadily increasing his bowling practice at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is on the verge of completing his final fitness evaluations. Once he receives the green light from the BCCI medical staff, Bumrah will join MI and be available for selection in the IPL.
It is known that Bumrah is taking precautions and prioritizing his full recovery before resuming play, with the upcoming five-Test series in England on June 28 in mind.
In IPL 2025, my team has participated in three games, emerging victorious in one and facing defeat in two. In the absence of Bumrah, we have given debuts to promising players such as Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur, and Ashwani Kumar. Our attack is led by Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, with Hardik Pandya also providing a seam-bowling option.
The latest report on Bumrah was given by MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene on March 19, where he discussed the “difficulty” of not having Bumrah in the early stages of the season. It was previously announced that Bumrah would be absent for MI’s games in March but would join the team in April. However, this schedule has been postponed.
Bumrah has been a consistent member of MI’s IPL team since 2013, with a record of 165 wickets in 133 matches. The only exception was in 2023, when he sat out due to a back injury.
Bumrah sustained his most recent injury during the second day of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. As a result, he was unable to participate in the Champions Trophy, which India emerged victorious in last month. This marks his first occurrence of a back injury since undergoing surgery in March 2023.
During the Champions Trophy squad announcement in January, Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, mentioned that the BCCI medical team had advised Bumrah to rest for five weeks after the SCG Test. As the tournament began on February 19, Bumrah was initially included in India’s provisional squad. However, due to ongoing discomfort, he underwent further scans in Bengaluru in early February and was ultimately not selected for the final squad.
