KKR bowler Varun Chakravarthy has received a 25% fine and one demerit point for violating the IPL code of conduct during Wednesday’s game against CSK at Eden Gardens.
According to the IPL, Varun’s actions after dismissing Dewald Brevis in the chase falls under a Level 1 offence as stated in Article 2.5. This includes any language, action or gesture directed at a batter upon their dismissal that could potentially provoke an aggressive reaction. Varun had gestured for Brevis to leave the field as part of his send-off.
The match referee’s ruling stands as the final and binding decision for Level 1 breaches.
Brevis’ impressive score of 52 off 25 was a highlight for KKR, giving them a strong chance to win the game. However, despite Varun’s excellent performance of taking 2 wickets for only 18 runs in four overs, they were unable to defend their total of 179. As a result, they currently sit sixth on the points table with only 11 points from 12 games and their chances of making it to the playoffs are slim. To make matters worse, their remaining two league matches will be played away from home against SRH on May 10 and RCB on May 17.
