Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has appointed Ottis Gibson as their new assistant coach for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Gibson will take over from Ryan ten Doeschate, who had been a part of KKR for several seasons but left in IPL 2024 to join Gautam Gambhir’s coaching team for the India national men’s team.
The defending IPL champions, KKR, have been compelled to make some adjustments to not only their playing group but also their back room. Last year’s title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, was let go before the mega auction and has now been selected as Punjab Kings’ leader. As for KKR, Ajinkya Rahane will take over as captain for IPL 2025 and will have Venkatesh Iyer as his deputy.
In the back room, as Gambhir departs to serve as India’s head coach after IPL 2024, Dwayne Bravo has been enlisted as mentor. The remaining squad maintains a familiar composition under the guidance of head coach Chandrakant Pandit and assistants B Arun, Carl Crowe, Nathan Leamon, and others.
Following his retirement from cricket, Gibson, the renowned West Indies fast bowler, has become a sought-after coach. He initially served as bowling coach for the England men’s national team while still actively playing in 2007. However, he eventually transitioned to full-time coaching and has since held positions as head coach for both the West Indies and South Africa men’s national teams. Additionally, Gibson had a second term as England’s bowling coach and also fulfilled this role for the Bangladesh men’s national team. He has also lent his expertise to several T20 franchises and worked with Yorkshire as well.
In the opening game of IPL 2025, KKR will face off against RCB at Eden Gardens on March 22nd.
