During the recent IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), fast bowler Lockie Ferguson sustained an injury after bowling only two balls.
Ferguson stopped after the second delivery in the sixth over and was observed clutching his left leg at the lower hip. Following a discussion with the physio, he had to exit the field and did not resume bowling, while SRH achieved their second-highest successful chase in IPL history with eight wickets remaining.
In Ferguson’s absence, Marcus Stoinis completed the sixth over but did not return to bowl for the rest of SRH’s chase. PBKS utilized a total of eight bowlers, one of whom was Shashank Singh, who made his first bowling appearance this season and provided medium pace.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer praised Ferguson for his ability to take wickets, which he has consistently demonstrated in previous matches. However, it was a major setback for the team when he was unable to do so in this match. Nevertheless, as a fast bowler who consistently bowls at speeds above 140 km/h, such ups and downs are just part of the job.
After recently healing from a hamstring injury sustained during the ILT20 in the UAE, Ferguson was unable to compete in the Champions Trophy in February. Unfortunately, this marks his third injury since November 2024. Prior to his hamstring concern, he had also suffered a calf injury that led to his absence from the ODIs against Sri Lanka towards the end of last year.
PBKS had already made an Impact Player substitution earlier in the game, with fast bowler Yash Thakur replacing batter Priyansh Arya. This left them with one less fast bowler during their defence of 245. Out of only two overseas fast bowlers in the PBKS squad this season, Ferguson was joined by Australia’s Xavier Bartlett. Prior to this match, Ferguson had an impressive record of five wickets in three innings, with an economy rate of 9.36 and a strike rate of 13.20.
