DC has bolstered their support staff for the upcoming IPL 2025 season with the addition of Matthew Mott as assistant coach. He will be working alongside Hemang Badani, who was appointed as head coach in October last year. The team’s support staff also includes Venugopal Rao as director of cricket and Munaf Patel as bowling coach, among other members.
Mott previously served as assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the first two seasons of the IPL in 2008 and 2009, when John Buchanan was the head coach.
Mott’s most recent prominent role was as the coach for England’s men’s national team in the white-ball format. After resigning from this position in July of last year, interim measures were implemented until Brendon McCullum was named the head coach for all formats.
Mott, who played cricket for both Queensland and Victoria in the 1990s and early 2000s, transitioned to coaching after retiring. He has worked with various domestic teams in Australia and England before becoming the head coach of the Australian women’s national team from 2015 to 2020. In September of last year, he joined the Sydney Sixers as an assistant coach for a three-year contract after leaving his role as head coach of the England white-ball team.
Mott’s achievement goes beyond the norm, as he has claimed victory in both the men’s and women’s T20 World Cups while serving as coach.
DC, one of the original IPL teams, brought in Munaf last November as part of their revamped backroom staff. Munaf took over from former Australian all-rounder James Hopes, while Badani came in as a replacement for Ricky Ponting. The trio was in charge when Dubai’s Capitals franchise claimed the ILT20 title this year, marking their first championship win in any men’s or women’s tournament internationally.
DC, who have only appeared in the IPL final once back in 2020, finished sixth in the 2024 season. As they headed into last year’s auction, they held the largest budget out of all ten teams. This was a result of letting go of most high-profile players and keeping just Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel on their roster. DC then made impressive additions to their team with KL Rahul, Harry Brook, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc joining their ranks. However, their captain for this upcoming season is still to be announced.
