MI managed to restrict SRH’s batsmen on a slow pitch at Wankhede Stadium last week. In the reverse match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, they once again held SRH to 143 for 8 after sending them in to bat. It was quite an accomplishment for SRH to reach that total, especially since they had a rough start and were reduced to 35 for 5. However, Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant knock of 71 off 44 balls helped salvage some respectability for them.
The most impressive displays of the innings were showcased by MI’s new-ball bowlers. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar each claimed two important wickets, causing SRH to suffer their lowest powerplay score of the season at 24 for 4. As their fifth wicket fell in the ninth over, SRH was at risk of crumbing to a mere double-digit total. However, Klaasen and Impact Player Abhinav Manohar joined forces to prevent this from happening, amassing a partnership of 99 runs in just 63 balls for the sixth wicket.
Klaasen displayed several impressive shots during his innings, including a reverse-scooped six off Jasprit Bumrah in the 19th over. However, due to the situation that SRH was in, he had to play cautiously with a control percentage of 86. He strategically took calculated risks when faced with slight deviations from MI’s bowlers in terms of line and length. Despite this, he maintained an impressive strike rate of over 160, showcasing his skill. Other notable contributions, such as Manohar’s 43 off 37 balls and runs from other SRH players, added significance to Klaasen’s performance.
During the innings break, Manohar commented that the pitch had been slow and the ball was holding in the surface, especially in the beginning. However, he believed that SRH’s score was insufficient.
In the initial moments of the match, Chahar and Boult utilized the favorable surface to their advantage by skillfully bowling with the new ball. However, despite SRH’s struggling top-order, conditions were not as challenging as they appeared. Both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma fell victim to their aggressive approach, resulting in caught shots. Similarly, Nitish Kumar Reddy also met his downfall with a mistimed drive to mid-on.
The most pivotal point in SRH’s downfall during the powerplay was the dismissal of Ishan Kishan, who fell victim to a leg-side strangle for the second time this season. Despite no genuine appeal from any MI player, Kishan began walking and Ultra Edge only added to SRH’s frustration by revealing no spike as the ball passed his bat.
SRH experienced another uncommon wicket in the latter part of their innings, courtesy of Boult’s double-wicket final over. The successful bowler recorded 4 wickets for just 26 runs. A well-executed yorker from him managed to pass by Manohar and hit the stumps. However, the batter, who was positioned deep in his crease, unintentionally disrupted his wicket in an effort to defend the ball with his bat.
