On April 13, during the IPL 2025 matches in Jaipur and Delhi, something out of the ordinary occurred. The on-field umpires surprised everyone by inspecting the dimensions of each batter’s bat as they entered the field. This was a rare occurrence, not commonly witnessed in previous or current seasons.
In the Jaipur afternoon game, umpires Nitin Menon and Saidharshan Kumar inspected the bats of several players, including Shimron Hetmyer, Nitish Rana, and Phil Salt as they approached the batting crease.
During the evening match in Delhi between the Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, umpires Chris Gaffaney and Vinod Seshan inspected Hardik Pandya’s bat upon his arrival on the field. All bats were deemed acceptable after the examination.
During Sunday’s game, the umpires conducted checks on the bats using a gauge that determines if the blade passes as acceptable. Unlike previous times when these checks were done in the dressing room, it was evident that they were now being done on the field of play.
Per regulations, the bat face must be within 10.79 cm in width, the blade should not exceed a thickness of 6.7 cm, and the edge cannot surpass 4 cm. Additionally, the total length of the bat should not exceed 96.4 cm.
