Both Rajat Patidar and Pat Cummins, the captains of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) respectively, have been penalized for their teams’ sluggish over-rates in Friday’s IPL 2025 game held in Lucknow.
RCB’s latest over-rate violation, which took place on April 7, has resulted in a hefty penalty of INR 24 lakh for the team. Additionally, the remaining members of the playing XII have also been fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, depending on which amount is lower.
Due to it being SRH’s first infraction of the season, they were charged a penalty of INR 12 lakh.
Despite being the designated team captain, Patidar was held accountable for RCB’s slow over-rate. This was despite Jitesh Sharma being the stand-in captain for the match and Patidar, returning from an injury, only playing as a batter.
In a similar scenario, Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson received a penalty of INR 24 lakh for their second violation as a team, despite Riyan Parag taking over the captaincy during their initial transgression.
In the upcoming games, if a third slow over-rate offence occurs, there will be a more severe fine imposed. However, this rule change was implemented for IPL 2025. As a result, Patidar or any other team captain in the league will not face suspension, unlike before IPL 2024. This was demonstrated when Hardik Pandya, captain of Mumbai Indians (MI), was unable to play in their season opener due to his previous season’s suspension carrying over.
