At the age of 24, Priyansh Arya delivered a remarkable performance, hitting a 39-ball half-century which ranks as the joint fourth-fastest in IPL history. This impressive feat led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a total of 219 for 6 in their match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Mullanpur.
Despite Arya’s impressive 103 runs off just 42 balls, the remaining top six players only managed a total of 32 runs in 25 balls, resulting in an unusual scorecard. However, Shashank Singh entered the game at No. 7 and added an unbeaten 52 runs off 36 balls to propel PBKS to a score of over 200.
Arya’s explosive performance during the inaugural Delhi Premier League (DPL) had sparked a bidding frenzy at the IPL 2025 auction, earning her high praise from PBKS’ assistant coach Brad Haddin. According to him, just one practice session was enough for the team management to recognize Arya’s exceptional talent. And on Tuesday, Arya proved their faith in her by delivering an outstanding display of skills.
Arya’s style of batting resembles that of Virender Sehwag, but with a left-handed approach. He has a natural ability to spot the ball and hit it with great force. Additionally, he possesses excellent timing. This was evident when Matheesha Pathirana missed a wide yorker and delivered a slightly difficult full-toss which Arya effortlessly sent over point for a six. In the next three balls from Pathirana, Arya hit two more sixes and a four, reaching his hundred in just 39 balls. To put this in perspective, only Chris Gayle (30), Yusuf Pathan (37), David Miller (38) and Travis Head (39) have scored faster centuries in the IPL.
Arya achieved his ton in the 13th over and was then caught out in the following over by left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad, hitting a wrong’un to long-on. He could have been eliminated in the initial over if Khaleel Ahmed had caught a relatively simple return catch. At that time, Arya had hit a six over point, scoring 6 runs.
Arya was granted a second chance on 35 when Vijay Shankar failed to catch a more challenging ball at midwicket. He proceeded to score his half-century in just 19 balls by stepping away and smashing R Ashwin over mid-off during the final over of the powerplay. Overall, Ashwin conceded 28 runs off ten deliveries to Arya.
Following Arya’s fall, Shashank and Marco Jansen formed an unbeaten partnership of 65 runs in just 38 balls, further demoralizing CSK. The only bowler from CSK who managed to keep the run rate under ten was Ravindra Jadeja.
