After a string of humiliating losses against New Zealand and Australia, there were doubts about Rohit Sharma’s future as Test captain. However, his impressive victory in the Champions Trophy has greatly influenced the selectors’ decision, making it clear that he will most likely be leading the team in their upcoming series against England in June.
According to Express Sports, BCCI and its selectors have given their support to Rohit and are in favor of him leading the Indian team on the five-match Test tour of England.
Following a period of poor performance both in the home Test series against New Zealand and on the Australian tour, there were calls for Rohit to relinquish the captaincy role. However, it appears that the BCCI is determined to have the seasoned player take charge for the challenging upcoming England series.
Rohit’s unsuccessful performance in the 2024 Test matches
Despite being the top contenders for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, India’s path took a turn for the worse during their home series against a diminished New Zealand team. The Kiwis dominated the 3-match series, resulting in a clean sweep and bringing scrutiny upon Rohit.
During the Australian tour, Rohit missed the first Test match, which was won by India under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy. However, in the subsequent three matches, he led the team and unfortunately, they lost two of them.
Due to his disappointing performance, the captain made the decision to exclude himself from the Sydney Test, resulting in India’s loss and elimination from the WTC finals.
