RR captain Sanju Samson has received clearance from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to resume wicketkeeping duties in IPL 2025. Despite initially playing as a specialist batter for the team’s first three games, Samson has now fully recovered from his finger surgery and will once again take over as captain from Riyan Parag. He will also be returning to his role as keeper.
During Samson’s absence, Parag had served as the captain for RR in their first three matches this season, while Dhruv Jurel took up the role of wicketkeeper.
Under Parag’s leadership, RR initially suffered defeats in their opening matches against SRH and KKR. However, they regrouped and emerged victorious against CSK in Guwahati on March 30. Now, with Samson returning as both captain and keeper for their upcoming game against PBKS in Mullanpur on April 5, RR has the opportunity to implement a more versatile Impact Player approach.
As a case in point, in the CSK match, RR utilized Kumar Kartikeya as an Impact Player during the first innings following Samson’s dismissal at 20. However, he only bowled one over in their victorious defense of a total score of 182.
In the ongoing IPL 2025, Samson has achieved a total of 99 runs in three innings with a strike rate of nearly 155. On the league table, RR holds the second to last position with two points.
