Sanju Samson, the wicketkeeper-batter for India, recently underwent a finger surgery. Although he is currently recovering, he is still expected to lead Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the upcoming IPL. The operation took place on Tuesday and it is estimated that Samson will need approximately a month to fully recuperate. This gives him ample time to regain his strength and be ready for the IPL, slated to commence during the March 21-22-23 weekend.
During the fifth T20I against England, Samson sustained an injury from a Jofra Archer delivery. Despite scoring 16 off seven, he was eventually substituted due to the injury and Dhruv Jurel took over as wicketkeeper. Jurel impressively caught three catches in India’s dominant 150-run victory.
Unfortunately, Samson’s injury caused him to sit out of Kerala’s quarter-final match in the Ranji Trophy against Jammu & Kashmir on February 8, which took place in Pune.
Samson’s performance in the T20I series against England was underwhelming, as he only managed 51 runs in five games with an average of 10.20 and a strike rate of 118.60.
After scoring a century against South Africa in an ODI last December, he was not included in Kerala’s one-day squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This decision came after India only played three ODIs in 2024 and he failed to attend the preparatory camp before the tournament.
Samson’s upcoming task is to captain RR in IPL 2025. Under his leadership last year, the team made it to the playoffs but unfortunately lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the second Qualifier.
