Shardul Thakur’s impressive 4 for 34 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday night has not only earned him the Player-of-the-Match award, but also secured him the top spot for the Purple Cap at IPL 2025 after seven games. Adding to Lucknow Super Giants’ success, their players Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh dominate the top two spots on the Orange Cap list as well.
The table for the Purple Cap
Leading with six wickets from two matches is Shardul Thakur, who stepped in as a replacement for Mohsin Khan. In LSG’s initial game against Delhi Capitals (DC), Thakur showcased his prowess by taking 2 for 19 while opening the bowling and dismissing Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel in the first over. Facing the formidable batting line-up of SRH, he continued to impress by claiming consecutive wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan in the third over, followed by the fall of Abhinav Manohar and Mohammed Shami later on.
Though Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ranks second on the list, his impressive performance stands out as the top return in a match. The exquisite way he executes his wristspin was on full display during CSK’s opening victory against Mumbai Indians (MI), solidifying his position as one of the most captivating players to keep an eye on this season.
At third place is Krunal Pandya, thanks to his strong performance of 3 for 29 during the opening night of IPL 2025 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The table with the Orange Cap
Nicholas Pooran has been consistently hitting sixes with ease for some time now, despite not intending to do so. Recently, in IPL 2025, he has delivered exceptional performances at No. 3, scoring 75 runs from 30 balls against DC and 70 runs from 26 balls against SRH – one while batting second and the other while batting first. He currently tops the list of six-hitters with 13 sixes in just two innings and boasts a staggering strike rate of 258.91, making him the most efficient batsman at the moment.
At the top of the LSG order, Mitchell Marsh trails behind Pooran with a total of 124 runs from two games. Against DC, he scored 72 runs in 36 balls and against SRH, he made 52 runs in just 31 balls. Despite being limited to batting due to his injury, Marsh’s consistent scoring provides LSG with some much-needed leeway at the top.
Following an exhilarating IPL 2024, Travis Head continues his unstoppable performance at No. 3. In the first match against Rajasthan Royals (RR), he scored 67 runs in just 31 balls, almost breaking the all-time record for SRH. And in the game against LSG, he added another 47 runs to his impressive tally in just 28 balls.
