It was no surprise that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was predicted to achieve the first 300-plus total in the IPL. After all, they had already scored 286 for 6 in their last match and LSG was short a couple of their top fast bowlers.
Despite their efforts, SRH failed to reach a score of 200, settling for a total of 190 for 9 with Shardul Thakur taking 4 wickets for 34 runs, his personal best in the IPL. However, it is still a substantial score.
Following Rishabh Pant’s decision to put SRH in, Shardul made quick work of Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan in the third over. Sharma was caught at deep square leg after attempting a pull shot on a short ball, while Kishan was caught down the leg side.
Head attempted to shift the momentum by hitting two consecutive sixes and a four off Avesh Khan in the following over. During the last over of the powerplay, he decided to challenge Ravi Bishnoi, but his attempt at a slog sweep resulted in the ball being sent towards long-on where Nicholas Pooran was unable to make the catch. However, in that same over, even Bishnoi couldn’t hold on to a difficult return catch.
At the time of the first drop, Head was on 35 but it only cost LSG 12 runs as Prince Yadav took his first wicket in the IPL by dismantling Head’s stumps. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen then pushed the team past 100 in the 11th over. Unfortunately, Klaasen was bizarrely run out shortly after when Nitish hit a full toss to the left of the bowler. Prince attempted to catch it but instead dropped it, causing the ball to ricochet onto the non-striker’s stumps with Klaasen out of his crease. Bishnoi followed up by bowling Nitish for 32 off 28, putting SRH in a difficult position.
Aniket Verma hit Bishnoi for consecutive sixes, then did the same to Digvesh Rathi in the next over. He was dismissed for 36 off 13 on the final ball of the 16th over. Shortly after, Abhinav Manohar was caught at deep point by Shardul.
Pat Cummins started off his innings with a bang, hitting three consecutive sixes before being dismissed on the fourth ball. However, the final two overs only produced a total of ten runs.
