Shubman Gill has his sights set on captaining GT’s batting lineup in the upcoming IPL 2025 season, leading them to make the most of the powerplay opportunities.
During the 2024 IPL season, GT’s performance in the initial overs resulted in a run rate of 7.72, while Gill boasted an impressive strike rate of 131.08. Among batters with at least 150 runs during this time, his teammate Sai Sudharsan had a slower scoring rate of 115.49. Although making it to the finals for two consecutive years, GT ultimately placed eighth during IPL 2024 which coincided with Gill taking on the role of captain for the first time. Moving forward, he is determined to lead by example through his batting prowess.
The 2024 IPL season saw multiple high-scoring matches, with eight scores exceeding 250. Despite this trend, Gill advises his team not to presume that the upcoming season will be identical in nature.
Gill’s leadership journey began during the IPL 2024 season, where he captained at the senior level for the first time. Before that, he had only led his domestic team Punjab on two occasions. Since then, he has taken on the role of captain for India’s tour of Zimbabwe in July, and has been appointed as Rohit Sharma’s deputy for both the upcoming Sri Lanka tour and the 2025 Champions Trophy. This upcoming season will prioritize Gill’s growth as a leader.
In the 2023 IPL season, Gill’s outstanding performance totaled almost 900 runs and he had a solid beginning in the preceding season. During his first six matches in the upcoming 2024 IPL season, he exhibited a remarkable strike rate of 151.78 while scoring 255 runs. However, his efficacy dwindled afterwards and he concluded with a total of 426 runs at a strike rate of 147.40. As the start of a new season drew near, Gill stressed the significance of distinguishing his roles as both a batsman and captain.
Despite not making the playoffs last year, GT’s overall record in the IPL provided solace for Gill. In fact, they have accumulated 28 wins in three seasons, solidifying their position as the most successful team during this time.
