Despite a slow start, MI ultimately had a strong finish, courtesy of Suryakumar Yadav’s half-century and Naman Dhir’s impressive performance on a challenging Wankhede pitch. Vipraj Nigam and Kuldeep Yadav also had successful outings, but the last two overs proved to be costly as MI’s total reached 180 for 5.
At the beginning of the innings, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton made the most of two consecutive full balls, scoring a four and two sixes. However, Mustafizur Rahman’s crafty delivery caused Rohit to edge the ball while attempting a drive.
Vipraj entered the game during the fourth over and immediately demonstrated some impressive turn. However, this success was short-lived as Will Jacks capitalized on Vipraj’s slight mistake by hitting two consecutive fours. Despite struggling with Mustafizur’s slow pace, Jacks managed to score a four over short third and a six over square leg with an edge and a clean flick respectively. Unfortunately for Jacks, his luck ran out when Mukesh cleverly slowed down his delivery and Vipraj made a fantastic catch while running back. As a result of these events, Mumbai Indians ended the powerplay with a score of 54 runs for 2 wickets lost.
While Suryakumar managed to escape with a top-edged sweep that landed just beyond short fine leg, Rickelton was not as fortunate with his toe-ended slog sweep towards deep-backward square leg, resulting in Kuldeep’s 100th IPL wicket.
Benefitting from the conditions, Vipraj varied his deliveries and nearly secured two opportunities in the tenth over, while Kuldeep maintained a steady performance. In the 20 balls leading up to the ten-over mark, DC conceded a total of 17 runs, as MI reached a score of 80 for 3.
The partnership recorded three consecutive boundaries against pacers, starting with a lap from Tilak off Chameera. Kuldeep then switched ends and kept the batters on their toes, causing them to miss-hit the ball. Suryakumar continued the momentum by dancing down the pitch and hitting a six over mid-off against Mustafizur’s cutters as he came on for Vipraj. This was his first six of the match.
Suryakumar initially hit a four off Mukesh’s delivery, but then faced two misses while attempting to sweep yorkers. Mukesh successfully took Tilak’s wicket as he mistimed a pull shot against a slower ball and was caught at long-on. In the 17th over, Hardik was also dismissed after hitting a lofted drive to short third, causing MI’s score to fall to 123 for 5.
In the 19th over, Suryakumar reached his fifty and Dhir took advantage to alter MI’s innings. Due to cramps, Mukesh struggled with his bowling and delivered three missed yorkers and two short balls that resulted in three fours and two sixes.
Suryakumar’s onslaught persisted in the last over, taking advantage of Chameera’s pace. He took control of the strike, hitting two sixes towards deep midwicket and two fours on the off side, ending on a strong note.
