MI’s Suryakumar Yadav will take on the role of captain in their first game of IPL 2025, as regular captain Hardik Pandya serves a one-match suspension for an infraction during the team’s previous IPL 2024 match.
According to Hardik, he was oblivious to the repercussions of keeping a slow over-rate in last year’s match.
MI’s opening match is scheduled on March 23 in Chennai against CSK. However, they will have to go into the game without two key players – Hardik and Jasprit Bumrah. Unfortunately, Bumrah’s ongoing lower-back injury, which has kept him sidelined since January, means that he will also be unavailable for more than one match.
As a result of MI’s slow over-rate in their last league match of IPL 2024 against LSG, Hardik received a penalty. This incident marked his third infraction of the season, leading to a one-game suspension and an INR 30 lakh fine for his next IPL match.
After being ready for MI’s second game against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29, he will be back for their first home match on March 31 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In the following week of April, he will play against LSG in Lucknow on April 4 and at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.
In the 2024 IPL season, MI’s standings were at the bottom after securing just four wins in 14 games.
